Paginated content — a blog archive split across several pages, a long product category — needs clear signals telling search engines how the pages relate to each other and to the overall series, or each page can be treated as a somewhat orphaned, thin duplicate rather than correctly understood as one part of a connected sequence.
Pagination rel & indexation rules
Paginated archives given clear indexation rules instead of reading as orphaned duplicates.
- Full backup taken before we start
- If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
- We never ask for your own password
What we need from you
- Confirmation of which paginated sections exist on your site (blog archives, product categories, search results)
- Access to the relevant templates for implementation
- Confirmation of your preferred approach where options exist (canonicalizing to page one versus treating each page independently)
This or something else?
| You have paginated content and want indexation rules properly implemented | This fix covers it |
| You want faceted navigation specifically handled, a related but distinct large-URL scenario | Faceted navigation crawl control |
| Pagination is working correctly but you suspect a different indexation problem entirely | Indexation audit & remediation report, the broader diagnostic version |
| You want canonical tags addressed generally, not specifically for pagination | Duplicate content & canonical strategy implementation |
What we do
- Identify every paginated section across your site
- Determine the appropriate indexation approach for each (self-canonical, canonical to page one, or independently indexable)
- Implement the chosen rules consistently across affected templates
- Verify implementation against a representative sample of paginated series
- Test using Google’s URL Inspection tool
- Document the approach taken for future reference
What is included
- Indexation rules implemented consistently across paginated content
- A deliberate, documented approach for each paginated section type
- Testing via Google’s URL Inspection tool
- A written note on the strategy applied
Not included
- Faceted navigation-specific crawl control, a separate, related fix
- Redesigning the pagination’s user experience itself
- A broader indexation audit beyond pagination specifically
- Ongoing adjustment as new paginated sections are added
Questions about this fix
Should every page of a paginated archive be individually indexable?
It depends on whether individual pages have genuine, distinct value for search — often page one is the meaningful entry point while subsequent pages add less unique value, though this varies by site and content type.
Is this the same issue as duplicate content generally?
Related — poorly handled pagination is a specific, common source of near-duplicate content, which is why it benefits from its own deliberate, considered approach rather than a generic canonical rule.
Will this affect how visitors browse through paginated content?
No, this is about how search engines index and understand the paginated series, not the actual browsing experience your visitors have clicking through pages.
What happens if I add a new paginated section to my site later?
The general approach and rules we establish should extend naturally to a similar new section, though it's worth a quick check to confirm it's genuinely following the same pattern correctly.
Could getting this wrong actually hurt my search visibility?
Yes, poorly handled pagination can dilute ranking signal across many thin, similar pages instead of consolidating it appropriately, which is exactly the kind of avoidable inefficiency this fix addresses.

If this is the second time this year
A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.
Your access, your rules
Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.
We back up first, always
Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.
If it is not what you bought
If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.
If we cannot fix it
You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.
If it comes back
Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.
What we are responsible for
If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
