Home / Fix a Problem / Store Not Working / Checkout failure diagnosis & fix

Checkout is the most fragile page on a store because more things touch it than anywhere else — payment gateway, shipping, tax, session handling, caching, and every plugin that adds a field. A failure can come from any of them, and the customer-facing message rarely names the real cause. Reproducing it is most of the work.

Before you buy, one quick test

Do this in a private window so your session is clean.

Add a cheap item to the cart and go through checkout as a customer would. Note the exact step where it fails — cart to checkout, entering details, choosing shipping, or the payment step itself.

Those four are completely different problems. Telling us which one saves real time, and if it fails at the payment step, note whether money left the account. If it goes all the way through and actually charges you, cancel or refund that order immediately from your own gateway dashboard — you’re testing where it breaks, not trying to keep the order.

Checkout failure diagnosis & fix

Customers reach checkout and cannot complete the order. We reproduce the failure, find which step breaks, fix it, and verify a real order goes through end to end.

What you are seeing

  • Customers report they cannot complete an order
  • The failure may be at one specific step or appear random
  • You may be seeing abandoned carts rise with no other explanation
  • Payments may be going through with no matching order created
  • It may work for you and fail for customers, or the reverse

Common causes

  • A payment gateway misconfiguration, often after a key or account change
  • Caching applied to the checkout page, which must never be cached
  • A plugin adding a checkout field that fails validation silently
  • Session handling broken, so the cart is lost between steps
  • Shipping or tax rules producing no valid option for the customer’s address

What we do

  1. Take a full backup before touching anything
  2. Reproduce the failure as a customer, on the device and browser it happens on
  3. Trace the order through cart, session, gateway and order creation to find where it stops
  4. Check gateway logs against site logs to see which side is failing
  5. Fix the failing step and any others found along the way
  6. Place a real test order end to end, then refund it

What is included

  • A checkout that completes, verified with a real transaction
  • A note naming which step was failing and why
  • Gateway, session and caching configuration checked, not just the obvious cause
  • The pre-fix backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Building new checkout functionality, which we quote separately
  • Payment gateway account problems only your provider can resolve
  • Recovering orders that were lost before we were involved
  • Design changes to the checkout layout

Questions about this fix

It works for me but customers say it fails. How?

Very common, and usually caching or session related. You are logged in, which bypasses page caching; a logged-out customer gets a cached page with a stale session token. Testing as a real customer in a private window is the first thing we do.

Money left my customer's account but there is no order. Is it lost?

No, and this is the most urgent version of the problem. The payment succeeded and the order creation failed afterwards, usually a webhook or session issue. The transaction exists at the gateway and the order can be reconstructed from it.

Should I switch payment gateway?

Almost never the answer. Gateway failures are usually configuration rather than the gateway itself, and switching is a large job that often carries the same misconfiguration across. We find the cause first.

Can you test without taking real payments?

We use sandbox mode where the gateway supports it. For a final check we prefer one real transaction, refunded immediately, because sandbox does not always reproduce live behaviour. You choose, and we ask before doing it.

Does this happen more on mobile than desktop?

Sometimes, and it's worth telling us if you've noticed a pattern — mobile browsers handle sessions and redirects slightly differently, which occasionally surfaces a checkout bug a desktop test never would.

If this is the second time this year

A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
