Home / Fix a Problem / Something Looks Broken / Classic-to-block content conversion

WordPress’s Classic Editor stores content as a single block of HTML, while the block editor expects content broken into discrete, individually-editable blocks — opening old Classic content in the block editor typically wraps it all in one generic “Classic” block that technically displays but can’t be edited block by block, which defeats the point of switching. The generic Classic block isn’t broken as such — it displays the content faithfully — but it can’t be rearranged, styled with block-level tools, or edited section by section the way genuinely native blocks can, which is usually the whole reason for wanting the switch in the first place.

A quick note before ordering

This is a conversion, not a diagnosis, so there’s no reversible self-check to try first — the change itself is the thing you’re ordering.

Complex layouts with nested columns, embedded shortcodes, or heavily customised formatting take more care to convert accurately than plain paragraphs and headings, so we look at what you actually have before giving a firm scope.

Where a page relies heavily on shortcodes from a specific plugin, we check whether that plugin has its own native block equivalent, since converting to that directly tends to produce a cleaner, more maintainable result than forcing everything into generic blocks.

We do keep your original content backed up throughout the process, so nothing about the source content is lost if you decide you want to revert afterward.

This or something else?

You want existing Classic content broken into proper, individually-editable blocks This fix covers it
The block editor itself won’t load or throws errors Block editor not loading – diagnosis
You want to convert to a specific page builder’s format, not native WordPress blocks A different, builder-specific service
Only one or two pages, and you’re comfortable doing it yourself Try the “Convert to Blocks” option in the editor’s options menu first; often free for simple content
You want new content built in blocks going forward, not old content converted No fix needed, just use the block editor for new posts

What we do

  1. Review the existing Classic content and note formatting or structure that needs particular care
  2. Convert the content into appropriate native blocks — paragraphs, headings, images, lists, columns as relevant
  3. Preserve formatting, links, and embedded media accurately through the conversion
  4. Check the converted result against the original for visual and structural accuracy
  5. Apply consistent block patterns across pages, if requested
  6. Confirm the converted content displays and edits correctly before considering it complete

What is included

  • Conversion of the specified pages or posts from Classic HTML into native blocks
  • A visual accuracy check against the original content
  • Consistent block pattern use across converted pages, where requested
  • The pre-conversion content backed up and retained for 30 days

Not included

  • A content or design redesign beyond matching the original’s appearance in block form
  • Converting to a specific page builder’s proprietary block format
  • Ongoing edits to the converted content after delivery
  • Fixing pre-existing content errors unrelated to the conversion itself, unless requested separately

Questions about this fix

Will the converted pages look exactly the same as before?

That's the goal — we match the original's appearance as closely as native blocks allow, and flag anything that can't be matched exactly before finishing.

Can I just click Convert to Blocks myself?

For simple content, yes, and it's worth trying first — this fix is for when that built-in option produces a messy result or you'd rather not do it page by page yourself.

Will this change my URLs or SEO?

No — the conversion changes how content is structured for editing, not the URL, title, or published content's meaning, so SEO shouldn't be affected.

How long does converting a full site take?

It depends heavily on how much content you have and how complex it is — we'll give you a specific estimate once we know the scope from what you provide.

What if I decide I preferred the Classic version afterward?

We keep your original content backed up for 30 days specifically so that's a safe, reversible decision if you change your mind.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
