WordPress supports multiple menu “locations” a theme defines — primary, mobile, footer — and a menu only appears where it’s actually been assigned to a location; a menu that displays perfectly on desktop but vanishes on mobile is very often assigned to the desktop location only, with nothing assigned to whatever location the mobile layout actually reads from. It’s an easy thing to overlook, since the desktop menu working perfectly gives no visual hint that a second location even exists, let alone that it’s sitting empty.
Before you buy, one quick look
Read-only. Go to Appearance → Menus, and check the “Manage Locations” tab to see every location your theme defines and which menu, if any, is assigned to each one.
A mobile-specific location with nothing assigned explains the symptom exactly, and confirming that before you order can even save you the purchase.
If a menu is assigned but still doesn’t work, note whether the hamburger icon appears at all, since a missing icon and a non-responding one point at different parts of the mobile menu system.
It’s also worth a quick look at whether the mobile menu location is a recent addition to your theme, since some themes only introduced a dedicated mobile location in a later update, after a site was already built around the desktop menu alone.
Menu not displaying or breaking on mobile
Your menu works on desktop but is missing or broken on mobile. We find whether it's an unassigned location, a script conflict, or a caching issue, and fix it.
- Full backup taken before we start
- If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
- We never ask for your own password
This or something else?
| A mobile menu location exists and has nothing assigned to it | Try assigning a menu yourself first; often free |
| A menu is assigned to the mobile location but still doesn’t display or work correctly | This fix covers it |
| The menu displays but the mobile toggle doesn’t open it | This fix covers it |
| Desktop menu also broken, not just mobile | A broader menu diagnosis, likely a plugin or theme conflict |
| A specific page’s mobile layout is broken generally, not just the menu | A different, broader display-fault diagnosis |
What you are seeing
- The menu displaying correctly on desktop but missing entirely on mobile
- A hamburger icon present but not opening any menu when tapped
- A mobile menu that opens but shows different or incomplete items compared to desktop
- The problem appearing consistently across different mobile devices and browsers
- The issue starting after a theme update, plugin change, or menu edit
Common causes
- No menu assigned to the theme’s dedicated mobile menu location
- A JavaScript conflict preventing the mobile menu toggle from functioning
- CSS hiding the mobile menu unintentionally due to a theme or plugin style conflict
- A caching plugin serving a version of the page from before a menu assignment change
- A custom menu structure with nested items the mobile menu script doesn’t handle correctly
What we do
- Confirm which menu locations your theme defines and what’s currently assigned to each
- Test the mobile menu toggle directly and check for JavaScript errors preventing it working
- Check for CSS or caching issues hiding or serving a stale version of the menu
- Assign, rebuild, or repair the menu structure for the mobile-specific location
- Test across multiple real mobile devices and browsers, not just a resized desktop window
- Confirm the menu opens, displays fully, and every link works correctly on mobile
What is included
- The mobile menu correctly assigned, displaying, and functioning
- JavaScript or CSS conflicts preventing the toggle from working resolved
- Testing across genuine mobile devices, not just a simulated browser view
- The pre-fix backup, kept for 30 days
Not included
- Redesigning the mobile menu’s appearance beyond restoring correct function
- Fixing an unrelated desktop menu issue, unless it shares the same root cause
- Building a new mobile navigation pattern your theme doesn’t natively support
- Ongoing testing as new mobile devices are released
Questions about this fix
Could I have just needed to assign a menu to the mobile location myself?
Possibly, and it's exactly what the self-check above is for — if that's genuinely all that's needed, we'd rather you know that for free than pay for something you could fix in two minutes.
Why does resizing my desktop browser window show a working mobile menu, but real phones don't?
Browser resizing simulates the layout but not always the exact JavaScript touch events or conditions real mobile browsers trigger, which is why testing on an actual device sometimes reveals a different result.
Does this affect tablets the same way as phones?
Depends on your theme's specific breakpoints — some themes treat tablets as a third, separate case with their own location or behaviour, which we check rather than assume matches either desktop or phone.
Will this fix work if I switch themes later?
No — menu location structure is defined by each individual theme, so switching themes means reassigning menus to whatever locations the new theme defines, which is a separate task each time.
Could a caching plugin really hide a menu change I made?
Yes, a page cached before you assigned or edited the menu can keep serving the old version until it's cleared, which looks identical to the menu simply not working.

A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.
