WordPress generates a fixed set of thumbnail dimensions for every image, and your theme’s templates expect those thumbnails at specific aspect ratios; upload an image with proportions the theme never anticipated, or change a theme after images were already sized for the old one, and the mismatch shows up as visibly stretched, cropped, or oddly proportioned images across the site. This is rarely a sign anything was done wrong at the point of upload — most people have no reason to know a theme’s expected thumbnail proportions before adding an image, which is exactly why this kind of mismatch tends to surface only after the fact, once the image is already live and visibly wrong.
Check the image’s actual dimensions against the display
Read-only. Right-click the distorted image, choose to view or save the image, and check its actual pixel dimensions against how it’s being displayed on the page.
A significant mismatch between the source image’s natural proportions and its displayed aspect ratio confirms the underlying cause directly.
It’s also worth checking whether the distortion appears in the admin’s Media Library thumbnail too, or only on the live page, since that distinction points toward whether the source thumbnail itself or just the page’s display styling is responsible.
Image dimension & aspect ratio correction
Images display cropped, stretched, or at the wrong aspect ratio. We correct the underlying dimension mismatch causing the distorted display.

This or something else?
| Images display stretched, cropped awkwardly, or at the wrong aspect ratio | This fix covers it |
| The image is broken or missing entirely, not just distorted | Broken or missing image restoration, a different fix |
| You want unused thumbnail sizes cleaned up, not distortion corrected | Unused thumbnail size removal & regeneration, a different service |
| SVG images specifically need upload configuration, not dimension correction | SVG upload security configuration, a different service |
| The distortion only appeared after a recent theme change | This fix covers it, likely a thumbnail regeneration is needed |
What you are seeing
- Images appearing stretched, squashed, or cropped in an unintended way
- The distortion affecting specific images while others display correctly
- The issue appearing site-wide after a theme change
- Images that displayed correctly before a bulk upload or migration
- Thumbnails specifically distorted while the full-size image looks correct
Common causes
- An uploaded image’s natural proportions not matching the theme’s expected aspect ratio
- A theme change altering registered thumbnail dimensions without regenerating existing images
- CSS forcing a fixed dimension onto an image without preserving its proportions
- A bulk import tool resizing images incorrectly during the import process
- Missing thumbnail sizes causing the browser to scale a mismatched size awkwardly
What we do
- Identify the specific images affected and confirm the nature of the dimension mismatch
- Determine whether the cause is the source image, a CSS rule, or thumbnail generation
- Regenerate thumbnails at the correct dimensions where that’s the underlying cause
- Correct CSS or template settings forcing an incorrect aspect ratio
- Verify affected images display correctly across the site
- Check for the same issue on other images using the same template or size
What is included
- The specific cause of image distortion identified and corrected
- Thumbnail regeneration where that resolves the mismatch
- Verification across affected images and templates
- The pre-fix backup, kept for 30 days
Not included
- Re-cropping or redesigning images for artistic or compositional reasons
- Bulk re-uploading replacement images you need to source yourself
- Cleaning up unused thumbnail sizes site-wide, which is a separate service
- Ongoing monitoring as you upload new images with varying proportions
Questions about this fix
Will this fix every distorted image on my site at once?
We fix the underlying cause, which typically resolves the pattern across affected images, though genuinely inconsistent source images may need individual attention.
Do I need to re-upload my images for this to work?
Not usually — regenerating thumbnails from your existing uploaded images is normally sufficient, without needing new files from you.
Why did this only start after I changed themes?
Different themes often register different thumbnail dimensions, so images sized correctly for the old theme's expectations can suddenly look wrong under the new one's different proportions.
Is this the same as removing unused thumbnail sizes?
No — that's about cleaning up sizes no longer needed; this is about correcting images that are actively displaying with the wrong proportions.
Will regenerating thumbnails affect my site's storage space?
Only modestly, since it typically replaces existing thumbnail files with correctly-sized versions rather than adding substantial new storage.

If this is the second time this year
A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.
Your access, your rules
Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.
We back up first, always
Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.
If it is not what you bought
If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.
If we cannot fix it
You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.
If it comes back
Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.
What we are responsible for
If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
