Home / Fix a Problem / Site Down or Erroring / Infinite redirect loop on homepage

A redirect loop means two things disagree about where the homepage should be. WordPress thinks one URL is canonical, and a plugin, .htaccess rule, or server configuration thinks another is — so each hands the browser to the other until it gives up. The fix is not removing redirects but working out which one is correct.

Before you buy, one quick look

Read-only.

Try the site in a private window. Redirect loops are cached hard by browsers, and a stale cookie can make a fixed site still look broken to you and nobody else.

Then try both http:// and https://, and both with and without www. Which combinations loop and which do not tells us a great deal, so note it down.

SOS-013

Infinite redirect loop on homepage

The homepage redirects endlessly and never loads. We trace the redirect chain, find which rule is fighting which, and leave a single correct destination.

This or something else?

Homepage loops, inner pages fine This fix covers it
Loop started when SSL was installed Too many redirects after SSL change
Loop only on the login page Login redirect loop fix
Inner pages 404 but home works Permalink repair
Loop after changing the domain Domain change URL migration

What you are seeing

  • The browser reports too many redirects on the homepage
  • Inner pages may work perfectly while the homepage does not
  • It may affect only www or only non-www
  • Clearing cookies helps briefly, then it returns

Common causes

  • Site URL and Home URL in settings disagreeing with each other
  • A redirect plugin with a rule pointing home at itself
  • An .htaccess or nginx rule duplicating what WordPress already does
  • A CDN or proxy adding a redirect the origin server also applies
  • A migration that left the old domain in one of the two URL settings

What we do

  1. Take a full backup before touching anything
  2. Trace the full redirect chain from outside the site
  3. Identify every layer adding a redirect — WordPress, plugins, server, CDN
  4. Determine which destination is correct and remove the ones that conflict
  5. Correct URL settings safely, without locking anyone out of the admin
  6. Verify all four combinations of www and protocol resolve cleanly

What is included

  • A homepage that loads on the first request, from any URL variant
  • A single, correct canonical destination with no competing rules
  • A note listing every layer that was adding a redirect
  • The pre-fix backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Choosing your canonical domain for you — we ask, then implement it
  • Full redirect map rebuilds after a URL restructure, which is separate
  • CDN configuration on an account we cannot access
  • Design changes or content work

Questions about this fix

Why does the homepage loop when everything else works?

Because the homepage is the one URL that both WordPress and most server rules have an opinion about. Inner pages are usually only handled by WordPress, so there is nothing to disagree with.

Can I fix the URLs in settings myself?

You can, and it is one of the easier ways to lock yourself out entirely. If Site URL and Home URL are both wrong you cannot reach the admin to correct them. We change them at database level, which is why we can always get back.

Clearing my cache fixes it for a minute. Is it really broken?

Yes. Browsers cache permanent redirects aggressively, so a loop keeps reasserting itself. If it comes back after clearing, the loop is still there and you were only seeing a cached moment of sanity.

Will fixing this affect my search rankings?

Positively, if anything. A looping homepage cannot be crawled at all, so the sooner it resolves the better. We make sure the surviving redirect is the one your existing links and rankings already point at.

Could a plugin I installed recently be the cause?

Possibly, especially anything touching SEO, security or caching — those are the categories that most often write their own redirect logic. Knowing what you installed or changed recently narrows it before we even start.

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.
