An image showing as a broken icon usually means the file itself is gone from the server while WordPress still has a database record pointing at it — this happens most often after a migration that didn’t copy every file, a cleanup plugin that deleted “unused” media that wasn’t actually unused, or a host-level storage issue, and the fix depends entirely on which of those actually happened. Two sites can show the identical broken-icon symptom for entirely different underlying reasons, which is why guessing at a fix without checking the actual cause tends to waste time.
Before you buy, one quick check
Read-only. Right-click the broken image and choose “Open image in new tab”, or copy the image address and paste it into a new browser tab.
If you get a clear 404 error, the file is genuinely missing from the server, not just failing to display for some other reason, which tells us exactly where to start.
If several images broke around the same time, note roughly when, since that timing often lines up with a specific migration, plugin run, or hosting change worth mentioning to us.
It’s also useful to note whether the images are still visible in your media library itself, or missing there too, since that distinguishes a display problem from files genuinely gone from the server.
Broken or missing image restoration
Images show as broken icons where photos should be. We confirm whether the files are missing or misdirected, and restore or correct them.
- Full backup taken before we start
- If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
- We never ask for your own password
This or something else?
| The image file is confirmed missing (404) when accessed directly | This fix covers it |
| The image loads fine directly but doesn’t display on the page itself | A different, template or CSS-level display fix |
| Multiple images across the site broke at the same time, likely a bulk event | This fix covers it, likely a migration or cleanup plugin |
| Only recently uploaded images fail, older ones display fine | Media upload failing – permissions & limits |
| The image displays but at the wrong size or badly cropped | A different, narrower display fix |
What you are seeing
- Broken image icons appearing where photos or graphics should be
- The problem affecting a single image, several, or the whole media library
- Images that worked previously and stopped without any obvious cause
- The issue appearing after a site migration, plugin cleanup, or hosting change
- Media library thumbnails showing broken too, not just front-end display
Common causes
- A site migration that didn’t copy every file in the uploads directory
- A “clean up unused media” plugin deleting files still referenced elsewhere
- Incorrect file permissions on the uploads directory preventing files from being served
- A broken symlink or storage mount, common on certain hosting configurations
- Database records pointing at file paths that changed during a migration or restructure
What we do
- Confirm which images are missing and whether the underlying files or just the display is affected
- Check the uploads directory structure and file permissions for the affected files
- Determine whether the source files can be recovered from a backup, if genuinely deleted
- Restore recoverable files to their correct location, or restore the correct database references
- Repair permissions or storage configuration if that’s the underlying cause
- Confirm images display correctly across the site, including the media library itself
What is included
- The cause of missing images identified and explained plainly
- Recoverable files restored to their correct location from backup where available
- Underlying permissions or storage misconfiguration corrected
- The pre-fix backup, kept for 30 days
Not included
- Recreating images that no backup or source copy exists for anywhere
- Bulk re-uploading replacement images you need to source yourself
- Fixing images broken by a third-party embed or external hotlink outside your own media library
- Ongoing monitoring for future accidental deletions
Questions about this fix
What if the image was never backed up anywhere?
Then we can't conjure the original file back — we'll tell you plainly if that's the situation rather than promise a recovery that isn't possible, so you know to source a replacement.
Could a clean-up-unused-media plugin really cause this?
Yes, these plugins sometimes misjudge an image as unused when it's actually referenced in a way they don't detect, such as inside a widget or custom field.
Will this fix prevent it from happening again?
We fix the specific cause we find, and if it was a plugin behaving too aggressively, we can flag that so you know to review its settings, but we won't remove tools you've chosen to keep without asking first.
Is this different from a photo simply looking bad quality?
Yes — a broken or missing image is a technical file and database problem; poor image quality is a separate matter of the source file itself.
Does this cover images in old blog posts too, or just current pages?
Any missing images across your site, current or archived, as long as we can identify and recover or correct them.

If this is the second time this year
A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.
Your access, your rules
Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.
We back up first, always
Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.
If it is not what you bought
If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.
If we cannot fix it
You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.
If it comes back
Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.
What we are responsible for
If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
