Home / Fix a Problem / Store Not Working / Checkout field customization from supplied spec

Checkout fields look simple and are not. Each one has validation, a place in the order record, a position in emails and invoices, and a role in what the payment gateway receives. Adding or removing them carelessly breaks one of those quietly — usually the order record, which you notice weeks later when the data is not there.

Two things worth knowing before you remove a field

Payment gateways often require the billing address for fraud checks, and removing it can cause declines that look unrelated. We flag this rather than remove it silently.

And removing a field stops it being collected but does not remove it from past orders. If you later want it back, the gap in between stays a gap. Worth being sure before it goes.

Checkout field customization from supplied spec

You need checkout fields added, removed, reordered or made conditional. We implement it from your spec without breaking validation or order data.

What we need from you

  • A clear list of what you want added, removed or reordered
  • For new fields, whether they are required and what should validate them
  • Where the data should appear — order admin, emails, invoices
  • Any conditional logic, in plain language

What we do

  1. Review your spec and flag anything that will cause problems
  2. Implement the changes on staging first
  3. Ensure new field data saves to the order and appears where you need it
  4. Verify validation behaves for both valid and invalid input
  5. Check the payment gateway still receives what it requires
  6. Place a test order end to end before pushing live

What is included

  • Checkout fields matching your spec, tested with a real order
  • New field data stored on the order and visible where you asked
  • Validation working in both directions
  • The pre-change backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Deciding which fields you should have — we implement, you decide
  • Redesigning the checkout layout, which is design work
  • Building multi-step or one-page checkout, which we quote separately
  • Content or copywriting for field labels

Questions about this fix

Can I remove the whole billing address?

For digital products often yes; for anything with a payment gateway doing fraud checks, frequently no. Removing it can raise decline rates in ways that look like a gateway problem. We will tell you which side your store is on.

Will removing fields improve conversion?

Usually, modestly. Shorter checkouts do convert better. The gain is smaller than most articles claim, and it is undone entirely if removing a field causes declines. Worth doing, worth doing carefully.

Where does custom field data end up?

On the order record, and wherever else you ask — admin, customer email, invoice. Tell us where you need it and it goes there. Data that is collected but not visible anywhere is a common and avoidable mistake.

Can fields appear only for some customers?

Yes. Conditional logic based on country, product, or another field is straightforward. Describe the rule in plain language and we translate it, rather than asking you to specify it technically.

Can a new field be made to auto-fill from account data?

Sometimes, if the data already exists on the customer's account or a previous order — we check what's available before building a field that asks for something you already have.

If this is the second time this year

A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
