Every comment, pingback and trackback WordPress ever received sits in the same wp_comments table, including the ones marked spam or trash that were never actually removed — pingbacks especially accumulate fast on an active blog, since every internal or external link mention can generate one, most of them adding nothing anyone will ever read.
Before you buy, one quick look
Read-only. Go to Comments and check the numbers next to Spam and Trash in the filter links at the top.
Also check Settings → Discussion to see whether pingbacks and trackbacks are even enabled — if they’re not, and the count of old ones is still large, that confirms this is accumulated history rather than an ongoing setting problem.
It’s worth noting the numbers you see rather than just glancing at them, since “a lot” and “several hundred thousand” call for the same fix but tell us something different about how long this has been building up, and roughly how much of the table you’re likely to see disappear once it’s cleared.
Akismet or a similar spam filter working correctly is actually a factor here, not a contradiction — a filter that’s catching everything it should is still generating a row for every single catch, and a good filter on a heavily-targeted site produces exactly the kind of volume this fix exists to clear.
Comment table cleanup & pingback purge
Your comments table is carrying years of uncleared spam, trash and pingbacks. We clear the backlog safely and configure settings so it doesn't rebuild.
- Full backup taken before we start
- If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
- We never ask for your own password
This or something else?
| Large numbers of spam, trash, or pingback entries confirmed in Comments | This fix covers it |
| General database size or bloat concern, not comments specifically | Database cleanup – revisions, autodrafts, transients |
| Genuine spam still arriving and needing better filtering going forward | Spam comment purge & filter configuration, a different fix |
| Comment display broken on the front end, not a volume issue | Not this fix; a display-fault diagnosis instead |
| Site slow generally with no comment-specific symptom | Slow site diagnostic report |
What you are seeing
- A very high number of spam or trashed comments accumulated over time
- Pingbacks and trackbacks numbering in the thousands with little corresponding real engagement
- The comments table showing as disproportionately large in a database size check
- Comment moderation screens slow to load because of sheer volume
- No indication anyone has cleared Trash or Spam in years
Common causes
- Spam comments caught by a filter but never actually deleted, just hidden from the main list
- Pingbacks and trackbacks left enabled with no volume limit or review process
- A high-traffic blog attracting automated spam faster than manual moderation can clear it
- No scheduled task ever configured to empty Trash after WordPress’s own retention window
- Akismet or a similar filter working correctly but its catches simply piling up unaddressed
What we do
- Measure how much of the comments table is spam, trash, and pingback data specifically
- Confirm nothing genuine is caught among what’s being cleared, sampling before deleting
- Clear spam, trash, and unnecessary pingback or trackback entries
- Configure pingbacks and trackbacks appropriately going forward, disabling them if you don’t use them
- Set up automatic emptying of Trash and Spam so this doesn’t silently reaccumulate
- Re-measure the comments table to confirm a real, measured reduction
What is included
- Spam, trash and unnecessary pingback data cleared from the comments table
- A sample check to confirm nothing genuine was removed
- Pingback and trackback settings reviewed and configured appropriately
- The pre-cleanup backup, kept for 30 days
Not included
- Improving spam filtering itself beyond what’s already in place, which is a separate fix
- Moderating or reviewing genuine, real comments
- General database cleanup beyond the comments table specifically
- Ongoing comment moderation
Questions about this fix
Will you delete real comments by accident?
We sample before deleting anything in bulk, specifically to catch genuine comments sitting incorrectly in spam or trash, and flag anything ambiguous to you rather than assume.
Should I just disable comments entirely instead?
That's a content decision that's genuinely yours to make — we clean up and configure what's there, but whether to keep accepting comments at all isn't something we'd choose on your behalf.
Why do pingbacks pile up so much faster than regular comments?
Because they're generated automatically whenever another site links to yours, or even when your own site links to itself, with no human moderation step slowing the volume down the way spam filtering does for comments.
Will clearing spam improve my comment filter's accuracy?
Not directly — filtering accuracy depends on the plugin's own logic, not how much old spam sits in the trash. This clears the backlog; it doesn't change how future spam gets caught.
Is it safe to disable pingbacks if I've never used them deliberately?
Usually yes — most sites never intentionally rely on pingbacks, and disabling them going forward simply stops new ones accumulating without affecting anything you'd actually notice as a feature.

If this is the second time this year
A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.
Your access, your rules
Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.
We back up first, always
Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.
If it is not what you bought
If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.
If we cannot fix it
You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.
If it comes back
Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.
What we are responsible for
If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
