Home / Fix a Problem / Store Not Working / Guest checkout & account creation configuration

Guest checkout and account creation are two separate settings that get treated as one choice. Forcing an account at checkout reduces abandoned carts for some stores and increases them for others, and the right answer depends on what you’re selling and who’s buying, not on a general rule. We set it to match how your customers actually behave, not the default WooCommerce shipped with, and check the surrounding flow so the choice doesn’t create friction somewhere else.

There isn’t a universally right setting

Subscription and membership stores usually need an account, because renewals and access have to attach to something permanent. A one-off gift shop usually loses sales by forcing one, because a first-time buyer with no reason to return sees an extra step and leaves. If you’re not sure which side you’re on, tell us your typical order pattern — repeat customers or mostly one-time purchases — and we’ll recommend a setting rather than just implement whatever you first asked for.

It’s also worth deciding this once rather than flipping it repeatedly. Changing the setting after customers have built habits around it — expecting to check out as a guest, or expecting an account — creates its own confusion, so we’d rather get it right based on your actual data than adjust it every few months.

If you genuinely don’t know which way your store leans, we can look at a sample of your existing order data — how many customers are repeat buyers versus one-time — and use that instead of a guess. Guest checkout also interacts with plugins that assume an account exists, so we check those before flipping anything, rather than finding out afterwards that a loyalty or subscription feature quietly stopped working for guest orders.

WOO-022

Guest checkout & account creation configuration

You need to decide, and configure, whether checkout requires an account, allows guests, or leaves the choice to the customer. We set it up and test both paths.

Needs WP admin login. Create a limited sub-account — we never ask for your own password.
  • Full backup taken before we start
  • If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
  • We never ask for your own password
Why this costs $49. An hour of a capable WordPress developer’s time runs about $82 in the UK, $100 in the US and $105 in the Gulf, and for anything urgent a two-hour minimum is normal. This is $49 for up to 45 minutes of hands-on work, with a full backup taken before we start. 2026 market rates.

What we need from you

  • Whether you want guest checkout allowed, required, or left as a customer choice
  • Whether an account should be created automatically, and when the password gets set
  • Any membership, subscription or wholesale logic that depends on having an account
  • Whether existing guest orders need linking to accounts customers create later

This or something else?

Account created automatically at checkout This fix covers it
Customers stuck in a registration loop Login redirect loop fix
New account or order emails not arriving WooCommerce emails not sending
Wholesale pricing tied to account type Wholesale & B2B pricing tier setup

What we do

  1. Confirm which checkout modes you want — guest, account required, or customer’s choice — based on your order pattern
  2. Configure account creation timing and whether a password is set at checkout or via an emailed link afterwards
  3. Set automatic login after registration so customers aren’t asked to sign in twice in the same visit
  4. Check any membership or subscription logic that depends on an account existing at the right point in checkout
  5. Test the full flow as a new guest and as a new account customer, on desktop and mobile
  6. Confirm order history displays correctly for both paths, so nothing looks like a missing order

What is included

  • Checkout configured for the mode you chose, tested end to end
  • Account creation and login flow working without duplicate prompts
  • Existing guest orders left untouched unless you asked us to link them
  • The pre-change backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Building a full customer account dashboard beyond WooCommerce’s own, which is a larger project
  • Migrating historic guest orders into accounts, which is a separate job with its own scope
  • Deciding your policy for you — we implement what you choose and tell you the trade-offs
  • Design changes to the account pages, which is theme work

Questions about this fix

Which setting actually reduces cart abandonment?

It depends on your store. Impulse and gift purchases usually do better with guest checkout; repeat-purchase stores often do better requiring an account, because it speeds up the next order. We ask about your order pattern rather than assume.

Can returning guests avoid re-entering their details every time?

Yes, if you enable an account option after their first order without forcing it up front. Many stores land here as the best of both.

What happens to orders placed as a guest before this change?

They stay exactly as they are. This only affects checkout going forward; nothing about past orders is altered unless you specifically ask us to link them to an account.

Does this affect subscription or membership products?

It can, since those usually need an account to manage renewals or access. If you sell either, tell us — we check that logic keeps working as part of this.

Will customers get a password-setup email automatically?

Depends on the option you choose. WooCommerce can email a password-set link after checkout instead of asking for one during it, which is often the smoother experience — we set that up if you want it.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
