Home / Fix a Problem / Store Not Working / Product review import & schema

Product reviews carry weight with buyers and with Google, and moving them badly loses both. A straight copy-paste drops the rating value, the review date, and the schema markup that lets star ratings show in search results. We import reviews the way WooCommerce actually recognises them — attached to the right product, correctly dated, and marked up so the stars appear where they should, rather than sitting as plain text that neither shoppers nor search engines can weigh properly.

What makes this straightforward

What matters most is whether your source keeps the rating and date attached to each review, and whether products can be matched by SKU or a stable identifier. If reviews only exist as text on an old site with no structured export, they can still be moved, but someone needs to check ratings against the original before they carry the same weight in search.

Schema is a separate question from the reviews themselves, and worth being clear about which one you actually need. Some stores already have reviews sitting in WooCommerce with no markup telling Google they exist; others have no reviews at all yet and want the AggregateRating structure ready for when they do. We ask which situation you’re in before starting, because the work looks different either way.

Timing matters too. Reviews that show a long, consistent history read as more credible than a batch that all appear at once with no history behind them — another reason to preserve original dates rather than treat them as a formality.

What we need from you

  • Your existing reviews as an export (CSV, JSON) or the URL of the site they currently live on, whichever you have to hand
  • Star rating, review text, author name and date for each one, if available separately from the export itself
  • How products should be matched — by SKU, by name, or a mapping you provide if neither lines up cleanly
  • Whether you want AggregateRating schema added even for products with no reviews yet, so it’s ready in advance

What we do

  1. Review your source data and confirm what’s actually available for each review, rather than assuming the export is complete
  2. Map reviews to products by SKU or the identifier you provide, flagging anything that can’t be matched confidently
  3. Import reviews as WooCommerce product reviews, preserving the original rating and date rather than stamping today’s date on all of them
  4. Add or verify Review and AggregateRating schema output on the affected product pages
  5. Test with Google’s Rich Results tool to confirm the markup is actually eligible for stars to show, not just present
  6. Report any reviews that couldn’t be matched or imported, and exactly why, rather than silently dropping them

What is included

  • Reviews imported with rating, date and author preserved
  • AggregateRating and Review schema verified with Google’s own testing tool, not just visually checked
  • A mapping report showing which reviews matched which products, and which didn’t
  • The pre-import backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Moderating or editing review content, which is a judgement call that stays yours
  • Soliciting new reviews from customers, which is a separate marketing activity
  • Fixing a review plugin that is actively broken, which needs its own diagnosis first
  • Design changes to how reviews display on the page, which is a theme decision

Questions about this fix

Will imported reviews show as "verified purchase"?

Only if we can match them to a real order in your store. Reviews imported from another platform have no order to attach to, so they display as ordinary reviews rather than verified ones — still shown, just without that badge.

Can you backdate reviews to when they were originally written?

Yes, and we do this by default. A block of reviews all dated today looks synthetic to both customers and Google; keeping the original dates is part of why the import is worth doing properly.

What if two products have the same reviews merged together on the old site?

We split them where the source data allows it. If the original data never separated them, we tell you rather than guessing, since guessing produces reviews attached to the wrong product.

Do star ratings appear in Google search immediately?

The markup makes them eligible; Google decides when and whether to show them, and that has slowed down industry-wide in the last few years. We confirm eligibility, not a guaranteed timeline.

Can this include reviews with photos?

If your source provides the images, yes. Photo reviews need the images uploaded to your media library and linked, which we account for when estimating this from a real export rather than a sample.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
