Home / Fix a Problem / Site is Slow / Taxonomy & term relationship repair

Categories, tags and custom taxonomies link to posts through a separate relationships table, not a simple field on the post itself — and when that link breaks, a post can silently drop out of a category it should belong to, or a term can report a count that doesn’t match what’s actually assigned to it, with nothing in the post editor showing anything wrong.

Before you buy, one quick comparison

Read-only. Pick a category or tag you know should have a specific number of posts, click into it from Posts → Categories, and compare the count shown there to what actually displays on the archive page for that term.

A mismatch between the two is a clear, specific sign of exactly this kind of broken relationship, rather than something else entirely.

It’s worth checking more than one term if you have the time, since a mismatch on a single category might be isolated, while the same pattern showing up across several different terms points at a more systemic cause worth understanding properly before any repair work starts.

It’s also worth checking a term you know is genuinely quiet, not just a busy one, since a broken relationship sometimes shows up as a term reporting content it shouldn’t have at all, rather than only as content silently missing from where it belongs.

What you are seeing

  • A category or tag showing a post count that doesn’t match its actual archive
  • Specific posts missing from a term they should be assigned to
  • Products not appearing under a category despite the admin showing it checked
  • The mismatch appearing after a bulk edit, import, or plugin action involving categories or tags
  • Term counts that don’t update even after editing which posts are assigned

Common causes

  • A bulk edit or import that updated post data without correctly updating the term relationships table
  • A plugin managing custom taxonomies that failed partway through a batch operation
  • Terms merged or deleted in a way that left relationships pointing at IDs that no longer exist
  • A migration that recreated posts with new IDs, orphaning their original term relationships
  • Term counts cached and never refreshed after a bulk change altered the underlying relationships

What we do

  1. Compare actual term relationships against what’s displaying to identify genuine mismatches
  2. Determine whether the relationship data or just the cached count is the problem
  3. Repair broken or missing relationships between posts and their correct terms
  4. Recalculate and refresh term counts once relationships are corrected
  5. Check for a specific plugin or process responsible if the pattern suggests an ongoing cause
  6. Re-verify affected categories, tags or taxonomies display correctly

What is included

  • Broken term relationships identified and repaired
  • Term counts recalculated and refreshed to match reality
  • The likely cause identified where a specific plugin or process is responsible
  • The pre-fix backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Restructuring your category or tag taxonomy generally
  • Fixing a plugin’s own batch operation logic, beyond identifying it as the cause
  • General database cleanup unrelated to term relationships specifically
  • Ongoing monitoring of term counts

Questions about this fix

Will this change which category my posts appear to be in in the editor?

No — if the editor already shows the correct category checked, the fix corrects the underlying relationship and display to match what you intended, not the intention itself.

Could a plugin still be causing this to happen again?

Yes, and we check for that specifically — if a bulk operation or sync tool is the ongoing source, we'll flag it rather than just repair today's mismatch and leave the same process to break it again.

Does this affect SEO for my category pages?

It can help, since a category page under-reporting its actual content, or missing posts it should include, is showing search engines an incomplete picture of what that section of your site actually contains.

Could this be why a product filter or search returns fewer results than expected?

Yes, that's a common downstream symptom — a filter or search relying on correct term relationships will quietly under-report results if the underlying relationship data is what's actually broken.

Will I need to manually re-check every category after this?

We verify the categories and tags affected by what we found, but a full manual audit of your entire taxonomy structure isn't part of this unless you specifically want that broader check included.
