Home / Fix a Problem / Site is Slow / Third-party script deferral & audit

A typical site loads scripts from a handful of third parties — analytics, chat widgets, ad networks, embedded video, A/B testing tools — and every one of them is a request to a server you don’t control, running at a speed you don’t control, on a schedule the vendor decided rather than one that suits your page. An audit is finding out what’s actually there and what each one is costing.

Not every script is safe to defer

Some third-party scripts genuinely need to run early — a consent management tool has to load before anything it’s supposed to gate, and certain fraud-detection or payment scripts expect to be present from the start of the page.

Deferring blindly can break exactly the kind of script you most need working correctly, which is why this starts with understanding what each script actually does before touching its loading order.

It’s also worth knowing that a script’s cost isn’t always proportional to how important it feels — a small tracking pixel from an abandoned campaign can sit quietly costing time long after anyone stopped looking at its data.

Scripts also load other scripts of their own sometimes, so what looks like one line in Tag Manager can pull in several additional requests behind it — the audit follows that chain rather than stopping at the first, visible layer.

The order these load in also matters more than most site owners expect — a script blocking the connection needed for something more important, purely because it happened to be added to the page first, is a surprisingly common and easily-fixed cause once it’s actually identified rather than assumed to be an inherent cost of using the tool at all.

Third-party script deferral & audit

Third-party scripts — analytics, chat, ads, embeds — are adding cost you can't see individually. We audit what's actually there and defer what's safe to.

  • Full backup taken before we start
  • If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
  • We never ask for your own password

What we need from you

  • Access to whatever is managing your third-party scripts — Tag Manager, theme settings, or hardcoded snippets
  • Confirmation of which scripts are genuinely required to load early, if you know of any
  • Any recent addition of a new script around when slowness was first noticed
  • Whether you’re open to removing scripts entirely, not just deferring them, where they add little value

This or something else?

Multiple third-party scripts suspected of adding load time This fix covers it
One specific script recently added correlating with a slowdown This fix covers it
General render-blocking resources, not specifically third-party Render-blocking CSS & JS resolution
INP or interaction responsiveness specifically affected INP remediation
General site slowness with no script specifically suspected Slow site diagnostic report

What we do

  1. Inventory every third-party script currently loading and what each one does
  2. Measure the individual cost of each script to load time and responsiveness
  3. Identify which scripts are safe to defer, which need to stay early, and which add little value
  4. Defer or reorder scripts to reduce their impact without breaking their function
  5. Test every affected feature — consent, analytics, chat, embeds — after reordering
  6. Re-measure to confirm a real reduction in the cost these scripts add

What is included

  • A full inventory of third-party scripts and their individual cost
  • Scripts deferred or reordered where safe, tested for continued function
  • A note on any script found to add cost with little corresponding value
  • The pre-change backup, kept for 30 days

Not included

  • Removing a script outright, without your agreement
  • Rewriting or replacing the third-party tool itself
  • Ongoing monitoring as new scripts are added
  • Negotiating with third-party vendors about their own script performance

Questions about this fix

Will deferring analytics lose data?

Not if done correctly — deferring changes when it loads, not whether it eventually fires. We test that events are still recorded correctly rather than just moving the script and assuming it's fine.

How do you decide which scripts are safe to defer?

By understanding what each one actually does and when it needs to be present — a chat widget rarely needs to load in the first second; a consent tool almost always does. We check function, not just guess by category.

Could a script we're not even using anymore still be loading?

Yes, and it's a common finding — a trial tool, an old A/B test, a marketing pixel from a campaign long finished, still loading and costing time with nobody using its data anymore.

Will this audit tell me which scripts to remove entirely?

Yes, where a script is adding measurable cost with little apparent benefit, we'll say so clearly — though the decision to remove it, since it may still hold value you're aware of that we're not, stays yours.

Does this cover scripts added through Google Tag Manager too?

Yes — Tag Manager just changes where scripts are managed, not their cost to the page, so anything firing through it is included in the audit the same as a hardcoded script.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
