Attributes accumulate. The same concept ends up as three separate attributes with different spellings, terms are duplicated with different capitalisation, and filters return partial results because products are split across near-identical values. Consolidating them is straightforward in principle and delicate in practice, because variations link to specific terms.
Why this runs on staging first
Merging attribute terms rewrites the link between products and their values, and variable products depend on those links. Done directly on a live store, a mistake means variations stop resolving and products become unbuyable.
We do the whole merge on a clone, verify every variable product still works, and only then push it live. It is slower, and it is the difference between a tidy-up and an outage.
Product attribute & taxonomy cleanup
Attributes and product taxonomies have become duplicated and inconsistent. We consolidate them without breaking existing products or variations.
- Full backup taken before we start
- If we can’t fix it, you get your money back
- We never ask for your own password
What we need from you
- Access to the store, and time for us to work on staging first
- Any preference on which spelling or format should win
- Whether attributes are used for filtering, variations, or both
This or something else?
| Duplicate or near-identical attributes | This fix covers it |
| Filters returning incomplete results | This fix covers it |
| Variations broken after an attribute change | Product variation display errors |
| Categories rather than attributes | This fix covers it |
| You need new attributes created | This fix covers it |
What we do
- Audit every attribute and term, and identify duplicates and inconsistencies
- Agree with you which values should survive
- Merge terms and reassign products on a staging copy first
- Verify variations still resolve after every merge
- Rebuild attribute-based filters and archives
- Push the verified result live and confirm nothing lost its values
What is included
- Consolidated attributes with consistent terms
- Products reassigned without losing their values
- Variations verified as still working after the merge
- The pre-cleanup backup, kept for 30 days
Not included
- Deciding your taxonomy structure for you — we advise, you choose
- Rewriting product content or renaming products
- Building custom filtering functionality, which we quote separately
- Design changes or content work
Questions about this fix
Will merging break my variations?
Not the way we do it, because every variable product is verified on staging before anything goes live. Done carelessly it absolutely can, which is why the staging step is not optional here.
Can you decide which spelling to keep?
We will recommend, based on which is used most and which reads better to a customer. The decision stays yours, because it shows up in filters and URLs that your customers and search engines already see.
Will this change my product URLs?
Attribute term slugs can appear in filter URLs. Where a merge changes one, we set up a redirect so existing links keep working. Product URLs themselves are unaffected.
How long does it take on a big catalogue?
The audit scales with the number of terms rather than products, so even large catalogues are usually manageable. If yours is unusually large we say so upfront rather than discovering it halfway.
How do you decide which duplicate term is the "correct" one to keep?
Usually whichever has the most products already using it, since that minimises how much gets remapped — but we check with you first if it's not obvious, rather than picking silently.

If this is the second time this year
A bad update breaking the site is a symptom of updates not being tested first. Care plans run every update on a staging clone before it reaches your live site, which is the actual fix for this happening again.
Your access, your rules
Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.
We back up first, always
Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.
If it is not what you bought
If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.
If we cannot fix it
You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.
If it comes back
Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.
What we are responsible for
If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
