Home / Fix a Problem / Site is Slow / Bulk image optimization & WebP conversion

Every image on your site is probably larger than it needs to be — uploaded straight from a phone or camera at full resolution, then displayed at a fraction of that size. Optimising means resizing to what’s actually displayed, compressing without a visible quality loss, and converting to WebP where the format saves real weight, done across the whole media library at once rather than image by image as you happen to notice one.

What this does and doesn’t touch

This resizes and re-compresses existing images and converts formats where it helps; it doesn’t crop, retouch, or change what’s in the photo. If specific images need editing rather than optimising, that’s separate work.

It’s also worth knowing this affects file weight, not visual dimensions on the page — an image will still appear the same size to a visitor, it will simply be a smaller file behind the scenes, loading faster for exactly the same result on screen.

The gain compounds across a page. A product listing with twenty thumbnails each carrying unnecessary weight adds up to far more than any single image looks like it should cost, which is why this is done across the whole library rather than as a one-off pass on a handful of hero images.

Format choice matters too, and it isn’t the same for every image. A photograph compresses well as WebP with barely any visible difference; a screenshot with sharp text or a logo with flat colour sometimes looks worse converted the same way, which is why the format decision is made per image type rather than applied as one blanket setting across the whole library.

Scale is usually the bigger surprise than the technique. A site running for a few years with regular content uploads can easily be carrying several thousand images, most never resized since the day they were uploaded, and the total saving from optimising all of them tends to be larger than site owners expect going in.

Bulk image optimization & WebP conversion

Your media library is full of oversized, unoptimised images slowing every page down. We resize, compress and convert to WebP across the whole library.

  • Full backup taken before we start
  • If we can’t fix it, you get your money back

What we need from you

  • Confirmation we can process your existing media library (originals are kept, not overwritten)
  • Whether you have a strong preference on the visual quality versus file size trade-off
  • Any images that must stay untouched — a logo with exact colour requirements, for instance
  • Whether new uploads should be optimised automatically going forward, or just the existing library

This or something else?

Existing image library never optimised This fix covers it
Images fine but pages still slow overall Slow site diagnostic report
A CDN for image delivery, not the images themselves CDN & image CDN integration
Specific broken or missing images Broken or missing image restoration
Lazy loading images that are already optimised Lazy loading configuration

What we do

  1. Audit the media library for oversized, unoptimised, or wrongly-formatted images
  2. Resize images to the largest size actually used anywhere on the site
  3. Compress without a visible quality loss, checked against the original side by side
  4. Convert to WebP where it saves meaningful weight, with a fallback for any browser that needs it
  5. Set up automatic optimisation for new uploads, if you want ongoing coverage
  6. Spot-check a sample of pages to confirm images still look correct at every size they’re displayed

What is included

  • The existing media library resized and compressed
  • WebP conversion with fallback, applied where it helps
  • Automatic optimisation configured for future uploads, if wanted
  • Originals kept, so nothing is a destructive, one-way change

Not included

  • Editing, cropping, or retouching image content
  • Sourcing new images or photography
  • A CDN to serve the optimised images faster, which is a separate fix
  • Optimising video files, which use an entirely different process

Questions about this fix

Will my images look worse after this?

Not visibly. Compression is set to a level where the difference isn't perceptible at normal viewing size; if an image genuinely needs to stay lossless — a technical diagram, say — we can exclude it from compression.

What happens to my original, unoptimised images?

Kept. Optimisation replaces what's served to visitors but the originals are retained, so nothing about this is a one-way, unrecoverable change to your media library.

Do I need to convert to WebP or is compression enough?

Compression alone helps; WebP typically saves more on top of it, at the cost of very old browsers needing a fallback, which we configure automatically rather than leaving any visitor with a broken image.

Will new images I upload need this again?

Not if you have us set up automatic optimisation as part of this, which processes new uploads going forward without you having to remember to run anything.

How much smaller will my images actually get?

It depends entirely on how they were uploaded originally — a site full of unedited phone photos sees a much bigger reduction than one that's already been reasonably optimised. We can give you a real number once we've looked at your library.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
