Home / Ongoing Work / Audits, Reports & Documentation / Thin & orphaned content inventory report

This inventories both thin content (pages with very little substantive text) and orphaned content (pages with no internal links pointing to them) together, since either can signal a page that’s underperforming, and a page can genuinely be both at once — a broader content-quality view than checking for either alone.

  • Your preferred report format, if you have one

This or something else?

You want both thin and orphaned content identified together, for a broader content-quality view This fix covers it
You want specifically orphaned pages identified, for internal linking purposes Orphaned page identification report, in the Content & Updates bucket’s Links category, the narrower, linking-focused version
You want duplicate content identified instead Duplicate & near-duplicate content detection report
You already know which content is thin or orphaned and want it fixed The relevant specific fix instead, depending on what’s needed

What we do

  1. Crawl the site to assess content depth and internal linking
  2. Identify pages with genuinely thin content
  3. Identify pages with no internal links pointing to them
  4. Flag pages showing both signals together
  5. Compile findings into an organised, prioritised report
  6. Recommend which pages are most worth improving, expanding, or removing

What is included

  • A combined inventory of thin and orphaned content
  • Pages showing both signals flagged specifically
  • A prioritised, written report
  • Recommendations for next steps

Not included

  • Implementing internal links for orphaned pages — a separate, related fix
  • Expanding or rewriting thin content — a separate, content-focused task
  • Deciding whether to improve or remove flagged content — that’s your call, informed by this report
  • Ongoing monitoring as new content is added

Questions about this fix

What counts as 'thin' content?

Pages with very little substantive text relative to what the topic would reasonably need — a threshold we apply thoughtfully rather than an arbitrary word count cutoff.

Is this the same as the orphaned page report in a different category?

Related but broader — that report focuses specifically on internal linking for SEO purposes; this combines that with a content-depth check, useful when you want a general content-quality view rather than just a linking gap analysis.

Will this tell me whether to improve or delete a flagged page?

We flag what's found and its apparent significance, though the decision to expand, consolidate, or remove specific content is a content and business call that stays with you.

Could a page be genuinely fine despite being thin?

Yes — some pages (a simple contact page, for instance) are appropriately brief by design, which is why we'd confirm any intentionally minimal page types upfront rather than flagging them unnecessarily.

How often should this kind of inventory be redone?

Periodically as your content library grows, though there's no fixed schedule — it's most useful after a period of active content creation or before a broader content strategy review.

Your access, your rules

Create a separate admin account for us and delete it when we are done. For anything else, we get in touch and agree a method — never a form field on this site, never by reply to an email.

We back up first, always

Before anything is touched we take a full backup and keep it for 30 days. If a fix goes wrong, we put the site back exactly as it was.

If it is not what you bought

If the problem turns out smaller than what you ordered, we refund the difference. If it is bigger, we stop and send a quote before doing any extra work.

If we cannot fix it

You get back what we received. Diagnosis is on us — you only pay when the problem is actually solved. The payment processor takes its fee before the money reaches us, so we never hold it and it is not ours to return. That is true here as everywhere else.

If it comes back

Reply within seven days of delivery and we put it back on the bench at no cost. The fix is not finished until it holds.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong with a fix, our responsibility is limited to what you paid for it. We take a full backup first so mistakes can be undone, and we tell you before doing anything outside what you bought.
